Well, let me start off by saying I'm not a gamer, I'm however, a photographer. I sold my Sony 18.4 AW125JW laptop mid last year and have been looking to upgrade ever since. Since that time, I purchased the HP Envy 17 (1011NR) but sold it because it gets extremely hot; it was a great unit however. I next purchased the Acer 8943G, a great looking laptop and a lot tech for the money, but the HUGE problem I faced with this laptop was the very, very narrow view of the screen. Once you look directly on to the screen it was beautiful and bright. Also, it didn't have a backlit keyboard (once you go backlit, you'll never go back:>)
So I held off for a bit until the beginning of the year, knowing that newer models would be coming out. I have known of the Asus G73 series since last year, but never gave it a second look for photograph work. When I came across this model (G73JW-3DE) and looked at the specs and the price, I thought it was the better buy out today. I did my tons and tons of research on this model and everyone praised this model (besides a few quirks with the 3D and keyboard back lit drivers) in particular because of its screen; 120Hz, matte (can we say; "Zero reflections") and it is 30% brighter than the regular G73JW-A1 model. BTW, I purchased mine from JR Music via the Amazon portal on 2/4
Other things that I like about this laptop are the sound, much, much better than the HP's Beats Audio system. The HP Beats sounds great with the headphones, but the laptop speakers forget about it (I sound like some mafia). This laptop with the EAX 5.0 / THX rocks with or without headphones, the sound is much fuller. Blu-ray movies are pure pleasure to watch and to hear, again, it goes back to the great specs of the laptop screen and the audio system. I have not had the opportunity to try the 3D function, but from what I hear, it's pretty awesome. I have no interest in 3D, at the moment. I also brought this laptop because it had a Blu-Ray Burner; it comes in handy when wanting to make Blu-Ray movies of your photos. One thing that has not been mentioned in reviews is the face recognition software. I came accustom to the fingerprint reader over the years, but I could do without it. Now, I just log on into my laptop just by showing my ugly mug into the laptop's camera. It not 100% accurate, but it will do.
Other great things that have been mentioned about this laptop, that I will not go into detail is the powerful video card, the processor, 1333 DDR3 memory and the dual 500Gb Hybrid HDD; though I will eventually upgrade to a 256 SSD. Also, one important factor that concerned me was, when a manufacturer put all of this powerful technology into a laptop; will it stay cool. I'm very, very happy to say it stays extremely cool; it is easily the best stock cooling system out there for a laptop.
So I wanted to give my thoughts (not a review) of this laptop from a non-gamer POV. I know this laptop may be an overkill for Photography, but I also do videography and I'm a HUGE Tech-Head and love my technology (probably too much). Also, I'm an IT Infrastructure Architect and use MS Visio very regularly and my most complicated drawings open up with zest.
I hope someone will benefit from this review. It really is an awesome laptop and a great value. BTW, I understand the Sandy Bridge version (G73JS-3DE) of this laptop will be coming out in the next couple of months; I have no interest. Besides, the recall of the SB Chipset, not the CPU, says "Thank havens I didn't wait". Anyways, I will not have benefited from the base 2.0 GHz of the SB; 1.73 GHz it just fine. Thanks for reading and feel free to ask any questions.
