The original optical drive in my Toshiba Satellite produced about 700 CD's and 50 DVD's before expiring. By way of comparison, desktop optical drives process three timers as many discs before encountering problems.
Fortunately, there are many web-based repair manuals for laptops; my Toshiba was no exception. The one-page instructions for DVD-drive replacement went exactly as described. The new unit was installed within five minutes and the next boot-up resulted in trouble-free operation. The only tool required was a small Phillips head screwdriver.
The replacement drive is a refurbisehed unit. My attitude was that the next time any component failed, I'd get a new laptop. I have every reason to believe that the replacement unit will yield comparable service.
Don't be afraid to dismantle a laptop. They are space-eeficient, i. e., very tightly packed, but easily repaired.
Just make sure you have a well-lit, uncluttered workspace when you decide to mount a repair.
